Feeding a family of six can feel like a full-time job, but I’ve found a simple solution that works week after week: my Instant Pot rice. I make a big batch, and it becomes a base for meals or a side for dinners all week long. Quick, consistent, and no fuss—this is how I keep dinner simple without sacrificing flavor.
Ingredients
- 30 oz bag of rice (basmati, jasmine, long-grain, or whatever you have on hand) – rinsed
- 8 cups water
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 50 g butter
Instructions
Step 1: Rinse the rice
Rinse 30 oz of rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess starch and keeps the rice fluffy instead of sticky.
Step 2: Combine in the Instant Pot
Add the rinsed rice, 8 cups of water, and the rest of the ingredients to your Instant Pot. Gently stir to combine.
Step 3: Pressure cook
Close the lid, set the valve to “sealing,” and pressure cook on high for 6 minutes. Make sure “keep warm” is turned off so it doesn’t overcook.
Step 4: Instant release
As soon as the cooking time is up, carefully perform an instant release so the rice doesn’t overcook. Fluff and mix it up with a wooden spoon.
Step 5: Serve or store
Serve immediately as a side, or store in the fridge to use as a base for meals throughout the week.
Tip: You can use almost any type of rice, and the cook time shouldn’t vary much. This method works every time, even if you’re not an appliance lover!
Note: Total Cook Time: ~15 minutes (includes time for the Instant Pot to come to pressure)
Why I love cooking rice in a pressure cooker.
Using the Instant Pot (or any other pressure cooker) ensures even cooking every time, without having to watch the pot. It’s faster than stovetop methods, especially for big batches that feed a family of six, and you get consistent results with minimal effort.
Serving Suggestions
Make a big batch at the start of the week, and mix and match vegetables and proteins for different meals each night—your family won’t get bored, and dinner prep is a breeze.
