Add character to a newer home with a contrasting trim paint color.
Adding character to a newer home can be a challenge. While new builds can sometimes lack the charm of older homes, there are a variety of ways to incorporate character and personality into your living space.
Adding contrast trim to your home is an easy and affordable way to give it a new look and add some personality. You can use a contrasting paint color for your window frames, door frames, baseboards, and crown molding. This will create a focal point that elevates the look of your home.
All of our homes up until now have always had white trim and doors and this is such a fun way to add color and character to your home while keeping the walls white.
I am overall pretty satisfied with the layout of our home. However, this little area of many doors has always bugged me. It is visible from our kitchen and has always been a bit of an eyesore to me.
We recently removed a board and batten wall in our dining nook and replaced it with a shiplap wall. Find out more about why HERE. I have not revealed this space yet as the project is ever evolving and incomplete. You can see the whole process in my Dining Nook Highlight over on Instagram. I made the decision to tie everything together by painting the doors and trim to match the shiplap.
I also decided to add some trim to the little gap to the left and paint it to tie in with the shiplap. It was a really minor detail that I think added a lot to the overall design. I didn’t add any shiplap here and just painted the drywall and it blends right in.
Trim Paint Color
I painted our doors and trim the color French Gray by Farrow and Ball. I had it color matched by Sherwin Williams and used their Emerald Trim Paint satin sheen. I always get questions on our wall color. More about that HERE.
“French Gray is really much more green than grey, but characterfully flits between the two depending on the light and time of day. Taking inspiration from French decoration and wallpapers used in the 19th century, it creates the most relaxed of rooms. This soothing hue is perfect for exterior woodwork and a particular favourite for front doors in our matt Exterior Eggshell, or garden furniture where it sits seamlessly amongst the greenery.” (Farrow & Ball)

Door Knob Upgrade
You may have noticed the door knobs were also changed in the after shot. Thanks to a collaboration with Nostalgic Warehouse (gifted) we have been in the process of upgrading all of our basic builder grade doorknobs to these.

French Gray Doors and Trim
If you have been thinking about painting your trim and doors a color that is not white but you are unsure about making the commitment, I hope this post cam help you make your decision! I am so happy I went for it.
A space that used to be an eyesore is my new favorite view!

Where is it from?
This solid wood drink table is so versatile. Perfect for narrow spaces. Only $59.99.
My rug is an old TJ Maxx find but this Amazon rug looks identical. I love the natural texture added by a jute rug.
The mini wreath came in a 4 pack for $7.99 from Target. They are actually sold as napkin rings.
My basket and vase were thrifted. The stocking is an old Hobby Lobby find. The bells and tree were from Target last year.
