Castile soap is a natural and non-toxic soap made without any synthetic ingredients. Originally from the Castile region of Spain, this soap is traditionally made from olive oil, although modern versions may include coconut, hemp, or other vegetable oils. Its plant-based origin makes Castile soap biodegradable and free from synthetic ingredients, which is a boon for both the environment and those with sensitive skin.
One of the primary benefits of Castile soap is its gentleness. Unlike many commercial soaps that contain harsh chemicals and fragrances that can irritate the skin, Castile soap offers a soothing alternative. It naturally hydrates and nourishes the skin because it retains the moisture-rich qualities of its oil base. This makes it an excellent choice for face washing, bathing, and even shampooing. People with eczema or other skin conditions often find Castile soap to be a soothing option that does not trigger flare-ups.
Castile Soap Uses
Castile soap’s utility extends beyond just personal care. Castile soap can be used for a myriad of tasks around the house. I use it for everything: washing hands, washing dishes, as a body wash. I even used unscented as a baby wash when by kids were babies. Fungus gnat problem? Drizzle some it into a spray bottle with water and peppermint essential oil to kill fungus gnats on house plants.
Its natural, non-toxic properties mean that it doesn’t release harmful chemicals into the air, preserving indoor air quality and ensuring that homes remain safe spaces for children and pets. Whether used in its liquid form or as a bar, Castile soap represents a sustainable, efficient, and skin-friendly solution to a wide range of cleaning challenges.
How to make foaming soap from Castile soap:
First, make sure that your soap dispenser is made for foaming soap. You can make the same soap without a foaming dispenser but it will just shoot out and be pretty liquid-y. I prefer foaming soap for this reason.
To your soap dispenser add:
- 1/3 Castile soap
- 2/3 water
- Optional: a few drops of an essential oil of your choice (the amount of drops will depend on the size of your container)
