Removing wood veneer with a wet towel and iron is a practical method that utilizes heat and moisture to loosen the adhesive holding the veneer in place. This technique is ideal for furniture restoration projects or when you need to replace damaged veneer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
1. Materials
You will need an iron, a wet towel (preferably an old one), a putty knife or scraper, and a pair of gloves to protect your hands.
2. Apply Moisture
Soak the towel in water and wring it out so it is damp but not dripping. Lay the wet towel over the veneer you wish to remove and let it sit for about an hour.
3. Apply Heat
Set your iron to the highest heat setting (this is Linen on my iron). Once the iron is hot, place it on top of the towel and let it sit for a minute or two. The combination of heat and moisture will seep through the veneer, softening the glue beneath it.
4. Removing The Veneer
After heating the area, carefully lift the iron and towel. Use the putty knife or scraper to gently pry up the edge of the veneer. Work slowly to avoid damaging the underlying wood. If you encounter resistance, reapply the wet towel and iron to the stubborn area for another minute or two, then try again. Continue this process until the entire veneer is loosened and removed.
Notes:
Remember to be patient and work in small sections to ensure the best results. This method is effective and relatively safe, but always be cautious when handling hot tools and sharp instruments. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area. With care and diligence, you can successfully remove wood veneer and prepare your furniture for a fresh new look.
