Adding a vertical shiplap wall to your space is a fairly easy way to completely upgrade the look of a room. I had been wanting to add some sort of wall treatment to the wall that our bed is on for a while and ultimately decided on a 5ft tall vertical shiplap wall with a little shelf on the top.
Project Supplies
- 1×6 nickel gap shiplap cut to 5ft length (gifted from Weaber Lumber)
- 1×4 craftsmen style trim for the base moulding and trimming the top
- 1×6 craftsmen style trim for the shelf
- Nail Gun
- 2 inch brad nails
- Table Saw (We own THIS ONE which is an inexpensive but quality saw)
- Caulk and Dry Dex for filling holes
- Paint (we used Sherwin Williams Super Paint Velvet Finish in Accessible Beige)
Removing The Existing Trim
The very first thing we did was remove our existing trim. This was necessary to me in order to get a clean and professional look.
Attaching The Shiplap To The Wall
We started out by using 2 inch brad nails and our battery powered Craftsman nail gun to secure the tongue and groove shiplap from Weaber Lumber (gifted). We started on the left and easily worked our way right across the room. We periodically used a level to make sure everything was maintaining straight lines.
My husband then had to rip some boards on his table saw to fit around the window. We previously trimmed our drywall return windows in our bedroom because we felt like we needed to in order for this to look good.
We then used a 1×4 primed pine to trim the top and bottom. Then we added a 1×6 primed pine to create a little shelf on top.
The next step was to caulk the seams and fill the holes with some DryDex. Here is how the project looked at just the primed phase.
Painting
Time to pick out a paint color. After much deliberation I went with Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. I got their Super Paint in Velvet Finish.
Here it is after 2 coats of Accessible Beige. If you’re wondering what white paint we used in our home I have a whole post on it HERE.
Shiplap Wall Reveal
Shelf styling can be tricky to get right and I’m sure I will still tweak this a bit. I decorated my newly built shelf with mostly vintage art, thrift store finds, and old books. I always love the addition of a vining plant on a shelf too so I added a pothos. Linking all that I can for this bedroom look HERE.
Thnx!
